<itunes:summary>It's been a while since I put up some slow jams. These mixes remind me of when you used to make mixtapes for the person you were trying to get with back in the day. Yeah you know we've all done it. Like always, just a bunch of my personal favorites. I dedicate this to all the ladies who came and partied with me in Arlington VA last week. Hope you all enjoyed the Aaliyah CD's. The next episode will be a tribute to my hometown. As always hit me with questions, comments, and requests at deejaymikerizzy@gmail.com

In a time where Lil Jon ruled the airwaves, I was literally listening to “The Listening” by Little Brother 24/7. 9th Wonder’s beats were every hip hop purists dream. Soulful chopped samples and lyrics that weren’t about drugs and gun blasting. It was hip hop that was fun and literally everyone could relate to. I was drawn to the music the same way I previously followed J Dilla, DJ Premier, Pete Rock and the Rza. Maybe they were just ahead of their time but real hip hop seemed to get pushed to the side for one note melodies and drunk in the club anthems. Unfortunately like many great groups like Tribe, Pete Rock & CL, Gangstarr before them, Little Brother disbanded. I still have hold onto faith that one day they may reunite, but until then i’ll pay homage to the man they call 9th Wonder. 9th went on to produce for everybody from Jay-Z, Luda, Destiny’s Child, Common, Mos Def, Erykah Badu and on and on. Thanks for all the support. Peace.

I still can’t believe what just happened yesterday. It still doesn’t seem real. Michael Jackson along with Stevie Wonder were my earliest musical inspirations way before I even knew what hip hop was. I was getting ready to put up a different mix but once I heard the news I knew I had to drop everything and put something together. I could’ve played it safe and just played Billie Jean and Thriller all through the mix but this is different. I wanted to showcase the songs that truly spoke to your soul. Michael Jackson was one of the rare individuals that brought everybody in the world together. As the world mourns I just wanted to do my part and keep the legend alive. MJ you will truly be missed but never forgotten. Thank you for all the memories.

I felt like this is a good time to make a sequel to the Feel Good Mix I made back in 2007. I usually listen to a lot of grimey rough and tuff hip hop but that doesn’t mean I don’t like to party and have a good time. So this is just a bunch of uptempo feel good music that’ll make your day a little more enjoyable with everything from MJ to Weezer to Shalamar. I’ve been getting lots and lots of emails from people asking me for CDs so here you go. The perfect gift for anybody and it’s actually edited so you don’t have to turn down the volume on certain parts if you’re listening with your mama. And if you really can’t wait for the CD to get to your house i’ll provide a download link to the mix so you’ll have it on mp3 as well. So skip out on your Big Mac meal one time and pick up this mix and make being stuck in traffic fun for you and your friends. Listen to the teaser below. Peace.

CD is $9 USD $3 USD for shipping (see left panel to purchase) Credit Card/PayPal Accepted

Run Time: 61 minutes 22 seconds + 30 Songs = Fun for everybody

- I also have “The Late Night Creep” and “The Dilla Hour” available on CD

Thanks to modern technology, nowadays i’m able to record every live set that I perform. And because of this i’m able to give to you a live Jay Dee instrumental set. I actually planned to do a Dilla set this particular night but didn’t plan out the songs. So this mix was performed 100% live and unrehearsed so excuse all the hiccups and blemishes. I saw an interview with House Shoes one time and he said that ” Dilla can make a Dre beat better than Dre, a Primo beat better than Premier, and out rock Pete Rock. But nobody can make a Dilla beat like Dilla.” While there’s a bunch of newer producers that make music in the same vein like Black Milk, 9th Wonder, Kayne, Just Blaze etc. To me Dilla still stands head and shoulders above the rest. Everybody knew he had the best drums, ill dancing basslines, and just so much soul. The soul is what I think todays music lacks and that’s something that you really can’t get from keyboards and auto tune boxes. Hip Hop was built from records and sampling and Dilla was a prime example why his music and all real hip hop continues to be rediscovered. While all the trendy music you hear nowadays quickly comes and goes. If you can name all these beats i’ll buy you a 20 piece McNugget box. Enjoy.

I started making these mixes in late 2007 mainly to be able to express myself creatively and share with people all of the music that has truly inspired me. A big part of it is because of how much the radio and mainstream music has changed for the worst and I wanted to expose the younger generation to what hip hop is really about and the essence of it. I can’t really express in words my appreciation for all of the comments and emails that I’ve received and I just wanted to take this time to sincerely thank all of you for the support in this short amount of time. Music is really a universal language and is a common bond that we all share regardless of where you’re from and what you believe in. So this time around I just decided to go back to why I started this and that’s to be able to just do me and play what I’d like to hear. So here’s more of that raw, not watered down hip hop and soul music for your listening enjoyment. Happy Holidays everybody!! Peace and love.

What’s going on everybody? Hope you all are enjoying the mixes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you. This time around my good friend DJ Vaperz came through and we recorded a live set and started the first of many future installments of Kuya Tribe Radio. For the first episode we decided to pay tribute to a forgotten era which is Freestyle music. Many of the DJ’s I learned from were spinnin this type of music back in the day (Shout out to Kuya D and Roli Rho). I remember being a little kid trying to learn all of this music so I could go to school the next day just to be like, ” you ain’t up on this!!!” Wow I must’ve been in like 2nd grade but anyways to all of you up and coming DJ’s I can’t stress enough how important it is to do your history and learn all of the different eras in music. Freestyle music obviously had a huge influence to what later became Atlanta Bass (see Gee Mix below). So this is my little way to pay homage to the Freestyle Era. We’ll be taking requests for future episodes so get at me on facebook, myspace, or email me at deejaymikerizzy@gmail.com Peace.

For this post I let the people decide the next mix I put up. After going through all the votes a 2Pac mix was the winner. I’m sure a lot of it has to do with the large majority of the people that visit this site are from California but it’s all good. Thanks again to everybody that gave their ideas and some of them I do plan to do in the future so keep checking back. But anyways this was really easy because i’m also a big fan of 2Pac. I was actually the only one in my whole crew that really listened to 2Pac. Being from Virginia you didn’t hear a lot of him on the radio partly because of the whole east coast west coast situation that was going on at the time but that’s another story. These are some of my favorite songs by Pac and most of them are actually east coast influenced. Before 2Pac signed with Death Row Records, 2Pac worked with a lot of East Coast producers like Easy Mo Bee, Stretch (RIP), and so on. Also right before he died he was working with Buckshot, The Beatminerz and the whole Boot Camp Clik so his style was really a mix of both coasts in my opinion. So here it is and if you’re listening to this at work be careful because you might want to snuff someone in the face or start a new revolution in your office. Peace.

The Listening album by Little Brother will always be one of my favorite albums of all time. I remember first hearing about them in 2003 from a review of the album in The Source. I heard about LB previously from the okayplayer forums but once The Source gave the album 4 mics and drew A Tribe Called Quest comparisons, I knew I had to see for myself what all the hype was about. First song I heard was “Nighttime Maneuvers.” I said to myself, ” Whaaaaaaat??!!!. (Lil Jon was really big at this time also) I couldn’t believe what I just heard I had to listen to it again. Phonte just straight murdered that track talkin about the aids cure and heinikens. And the 9th Wonder track was like a breath of fresh air compared to all the Synth and Korg Triton beats that were filling the airwaves at the time (it’s actually even worse nowadays now though right?!). I was also really spinning records in clubs heavy around this time with my crew and this was the inspiration I needed. This group really reminded me of why I love hip hop so much and 9th Wonder was a big reason why I decided to learn production and not just dj. Although it felt like my dog died when 9th Wonder left the group, I’ll never forget how this group made me feel when I first heard them. So here’s some of my favorite joints from Little Brother. Support real hip hop. Peace.

The other day I was watching the actual House Party movie and found myself jammin to every song they played. I really miss the New Jack Swing era when Teddy Riley ruled the radio. All of the songs during this time had so much energy and just made you wanna dance. Also I think this era is probably the most overlooked era ever. Even when they play old school skits on the radio you hardly hear any songs from this era except for the usual “motownphilly” and “poison.” So I felt like it was needed to pay tribute to all of the artists of this time period and pass it on to the younger generation. Do your history. Peace.

<itunes:summary>The other day I was watching the actual House Party movie and found myself jammin to every song they played. I really miss the New Jack Swing era when Teddy Riley ruled the radio. All of the songs during this time had so much energy and just made you wanna dance. Also I think this era is probably the most overlooked era ever. Even when they play old school skits on the radio you hardly hear any songs from this era except for the usual "motownphilly" and "poison." So I felt like it was needed to pay tribute to all of the artists of this time period and pass it on to the younger generation. Do your history. Peace.

Back again and I decided to flip the script. If you haven’t noticed by the variety of mixes on this page I do my best to try and please everybody which is an impossible task. But this time around I decided to just do me. I’ve been a dedicated DJ Premier fan since I was a little kid in the early 90’s. I clearly remember buying whole albums just to hear the track Premier produced on the album. So I bring to you an assortment of Primo joints that came into my head today and hit record. Hopefully you all will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it. I’m thinking about doing a sequel to the 80’s mix next or who knows. Flo Rida fans need not listen.

This is actually the first mix I ever wanted to do but I decided till I was a few episodes deep to give it special attention. ATCQ is a big reason if not the biggest reason why I even got into hip hop. They are probably the most consistent group of all time in my opinion and their influence still inspires pretty much everybody today. Although I do believe that J Dilla carried the torch passed from ATCQ and took it to a higher level, you still got to respect the pioneers. This is for all the real hip hop heads and all the young people who respect old school game at its finest. Peace.

<itunes:summary>This is actually the first mix I ever wanted to do but I decided till I was a few episodes deep to give it special attention. Peace.

I remember back in high school before I even touched a turntable I would roll with DJ Delinger and DJ Kuya D and they would rock house parties and clubs all around the Virginia Beach area. This was about around 1996 right before the so called “jiggy era” began. Whatever party we were at nothing got the party live more than their reggae sets. If you’ve ever been to a Kuya Tribe party you definitely know what i’m talking about. Everybody knows how much the ladies love reggae so this is definitely for y’all. I tried to include most of the songs from that particular era because these songs take me back and let me reminisce about the good times and hopefully you can relate. If you were too young to know these songs i hope you can appreciate it for being good music and spread the knowledge.

This mix to sum it all up is like a time capsule of songs I was listening to in middle school and through high school. I truly believe the music back then was a lot better than what you hear now because artists back then still had their creative freedom. In the 90’s you can have your gangsta rap with Snoop and Dre but you can also have A Tribe Called Quest or Outkast. I made this mix a couple years ago but people still ask me for copies so i figured it’d be easier to just post it. So enjoy and reminisce about Cross Colors, Karl Kani, Patrick Ewing sneakers or whatever you wore in the 90’s.

<itunes:summary>This mix to sum it all up is like a time capsule of songs I was listening to in middle school and through high school.

This is definitely hip hop in its purest form. Dilla was in my opinion the greatest producer of all time and also one of the best on the mic as well. Enjoy and pay homage to Dilla.
For the next few posts i’m going to be posting some of the mixes me and my crew did in the past to get everybody familiar with what we do. This right here is for the freaks haha! This is a slow jam mix I did back in 04 and i must have really been on some love pills or something but it’s all good because I got a lot of love for doing it and i’m happy with it. I listed the track listing at the bottom so you don’t have to ask me what song such and such is called. So yeah pop this in when you’re with your special someone, driving around late at night, or if you just enjoy some classic r&b music. Stay tuned because once i get past this wack limited storage space for the first month i’m going to be dropping new mixes like bird doo doo. peace

Once again it’s on!! Now everybody has their own opinion of who the best rapper of all time is. Of course you hear people mention Rakim, Kane, LL, Biggie, Jay, Snoop, Cube, and so on and so on. But if you ask me and everybody that knows me knows that i’m going to have to go with Nas. To me there’s just nobody that’s been on top this long and has as many classic songs as the man they call Nasty Nas. I mean the man beat Jay-Z in his prime in arguably the biggest battle in hip hop history. He’s been on the top level since Biggie and Pac were around not even Rakim enjoyed a reign that long. So for this podcast I decided to put together some hot Nas songs that weren’t singles but equally as dope if not better. This is definitely for my real hip hop heads out there who don’t do the whole “Soulja Boy” kiddie ringtone rap thing. Peace till the next one.

<itunes:summary>Once again it's on!! Now everybody has their own opinion of who the best rapper of all time is. Of course you hear people mention Rakim, Kane, LL, Biggie, Jay, Snoop, Cube, and so on and so on. But if you ask me and everybody that knows me knows that i'm going to have to go with Nas. To me there's just nobody that's been on top this long and has as many classic songs as the man they call Nasty Nas. I mean the man beat Jay-Z in his prime in arguably the biggest battle in hip hop history. He's been on the top level since Biggie and Pac were around not even Rakim enjoyed a reign that long. So for this podcast I decided to put together some hot Nas songs that weren't singles but equally as dope if not better. This is definitely for my real hip hop heads out there who don't do the whole "Soulja Boy" kiddie ringtone rap thing. Peace till the next one.

Somebody told me I need to give a little background to each of my posts so yeah I decided that might be a good idea. I decided to start off by doing a Neptunes mix for one because I am from Virginia, and two because they really had a huge impact on radio. The first song I probably heard from the neptunes was “Use Your Heart” by SWV. That song is still one of my favorites by them today. The crazy thing about that song is that there’s actually a sample on that and as you can tell from most of their work they don’t usually sample. Everybody knows their whole catalog but there are two pieces of work by them that will always stick out in my mind. One of them was the “Kaleidescope” (think thats how you spell it) by Kelis. This album came out around 99 and to me it was just ahead of its time. Songs like Roller Rink, No Turning Back, Game Show, etc were like nothing i’ve ever heard before. That album still gets plenty of burn in my ipod so yeah go check that out. The other album i liked was the original NERD album “In Search Of..” without the live instruments. That album to me was just exactly what i liked about them and thats hard hitting drums, deep bass, and lush arrangements. I always felt like that album didn’t get the promotion it deserved but I guess the labels had a hard time figuring out which demographic to cater to because if you think about it, it wasn’t exactly just hip hop or rock. But yeah if you have a favorite feel free to tell me about it here or add me on myspace (myspace.com/mikerizzyktp). I love talking music all the time so get at me. Thanks again for checking this out. I’m not sure which post i’m gonna do next but in the near future i plan to definitely do a J Dilla Mix, 80’s Mix, Classic Dancehall, maybe a Nas one or who knows what else so stay tuned. Much love and respect to everybody.
