If you didn’t know I hail from Virginia Beach, Virginia.  As far as the music scene everybody instantly thinks of Timbaland and the Neptunes all over the radio.  I’ve already made mixes paying homage to them, but everything in VA isn’t peaches and cream and radio friendly.  As much as I respect Timbaland and The Neptunes they’re not even my favorite producers from my home state.  You know I represent the hard core rugged and raw real hip hop and the VA representative bringing those grimey beats is none other than Nottz Raw.  If you don’t know who he is i’m sure you heard his music and don’t even know it.  He’s worked with everyone from Biggie, Busta Rhymes, J. Here’s a mix that I wasn’t really going to really put out but changed my mind due to overwhelming demand.  Aaliyah will always be my favorite female artist.  She had more style than any female artist out today and her music will live forever.  I know there’s a movie about her life coming out and I can’t wait to see it.  The music her and Timbaland made had that Michael Jackson/Quincy Jones magic.  So here’s a mix of my personal favorites from Aaliyah.

In a time where Lil Jon ruled the airwaves, I was literally listening to “The Listening” by Little Brother 24/7.  9th Wonder’s beats were every hip hop purists dream.  Soulful chopped samples and lyrics that weren’t about drugs and gun blasting.  It was hip hop that was fun and literally everyone could relate to.  I was drawn to the music the same way I previously followed J Dilla, DJ Premier,  Pete Rock and the Rza.  Maybe they were just ahead of their time but real hip hop seemed to get pushed to the side for one note melodies and drunk in the club anthems.  Unfortunately like many great groups like Tribe, Pete Rock & CL, Gangstarr before them, Little Brother disbanded.  I still have hold onto faith that one day they may reunite, but until then i’ll pay homage to the man they call 9th Wonder.  9th went on to produce for everybody from Jay-Z, Luda, Destiny’s Child, Common, Mos Def, Erykah Badu and on and on.   Thanks for all the support.  Peace.

I still can’t believe what just happened yesterday.  It still doesn’t seem real.  Michael Jackson along with Stevie Wonder were my earliest musical inspirations way before I even knew what hip hop was.  I was getting ready to put up a different mix but once I heard the news I knew I had to drop everything and put something together.  I could’ve played it safe and just played Billie Jean and Thriller all through the mix but this is different.  I wanted to showcase the songs that truly spoke to your soul.  Michael Jackson was one of the rare individuals that brought everybody in the world together.  As the world mourns I just wanted to do my part and keep the legend alive.  MJ you will truly be missed but never forgotten.  Thank you for all the memories.

Mary J. Blige will always be one of my favorite artists.  Even though she’s made songs with Elton John, Sting, U2, etc.  She’s never lost her street credibility working with just about every pop artist,  while others who’ve tried haven’t been nearly as successful (Wyclef).  In short, Mary J. is Hip Hop.  Here’s a short selection of some her classics.  So this one is for all of you ladies and r&b fanatics like myself.  I’ll have to man it up a little on the next joint though.  Peace.

Thanks to modern technology, nowadays i’m able to record every live set that I perform.  And because of this i’m able to give to you a live Jay Dee instrumental set.  I actually planned to do a Dilla set this particular night but didn’t plan out the songs.  So this mix was performed 100% live and unrehearsed so excuse all the hiccups and blemishes.  I saw an interview with House Shoes one time and he said that ” Dilla can make a Dre beat better than Dre, a Primo beat better than Premier, and out rock Pete Rock.  But nobody can make a Dilla beat like Dilla.”  While there’s a bunch of newer producers that make music in the same vein like Black Milk, 9th Wonder, Kayne, Just Blaze etc.  To me Dilla still stands head and shoulders above the rest.  Everybody knew he had the best drums, ill dancing basslines, and just so much soul.  The soul is what I think todays music lacks and that’s something that you really can’t get from keyboards and auto tune boxes.  Hip Hop was built from records and sampling and Dilla was a prime example why his music and all real hip hop continues to be rediscovered. While all the trendy music you hear nowadays quickly comes and goes.  If you can name all these beats i’ll buy you a 20 piece McNugget box.   Enjoy.

What’s going on everybody?  Hope you all are enjoying the mixes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you.  This time around my good friend DJ Vaperz came through and we recorded a live set and started the first of many future installments of Kuya Tribe Radio.  For the first episode we decided to pay tribute to a forgotten era which is Freestyle music.  Many of the DJ’s I learned from were spinnin this type of music back in the day (Shout out to Kuya D and Roli Rho).  I remember being a little kid trying to learn all of this music so I could go to school the next day just to be like, ” you ain’t up on this!!!”  Wow I must’ve been in like 2nd grade but anyways to all of you up and coming DJ’s I can’t stress enough how important it is to do your history and learn all of the different eras in music.  Freestyle music obviously had a huge influence to what later became Atlanta Bass (see Gee Mix below).  So this is my little way to pay homage to the Freestyle Era.  We’ll be taking requests for future episodes so get at me on facebook, myspace, or email me at deejaymikerizzy@gmail.com  Peace.

I can hardly listen to the radio nowadays.  It seems like all the good music and even music videos are mostly found on the internet instead of the radio.  This mix just started out as something i made for myself to listen to on the ipod or in the car.  But i got a lot emails from people who enjoyed the “For The Cool” mix i did for Commonwealth which to me represents the music i’m truly passionate about.  So i decided to share this one and if at least a few of you enjoy it, i’ll be happy with that.  Real rhymes and beats is why i love hip hop so much.  Hooks like “she got a donk” just doesn’t do it for me.  I’ve been thuggin it out lately so i’ll probably do something for the ladies on the next joint.  Maybe another Feel Good Mix or slow jams.  Get at me.

For this post I let the people decide the next mix I put up.  After going through all the votes a 2Pac mix was the winner.  I’m sure a lot of it has to do with the large majority of the people that visit this site are from California but it’s all good.  Thanks again to everybody that gave their ideas and some of them I do plan to do in the future so keep checking back.  But anyways this was really easy because i’m also a big fan of 2Pac.  I was actually the only one in my whole crew that really listened to 2Pac.  Being from Virginia you didn’t hear a lot of him on the radio partly because of the whole east coast west coast situation that was going on at the time but that’s another story.  These are some of my favorite songs by Pac and most of them are actually east coast influenced.  Before 2Pac signed with Death Row Records, 2Pac worked with a lot of East Coast producers like Easy Mo Bee, Stretch (RIP), and so on.  Also right before he died he was working with Buckshot, The Beatminerz and the whole Boot Camp Clik so his style was really a mix of both coasts in my opinion.  So here it is and if you’re listening to this at work be careful because you might want to snuff someone in the face or start a new revolution in your office.  Peace.

The Listening album by Little Brother will always be one of my favorite albums of all time.  I remember first hearing about them in 2003 from a review of the album in The Source.  I heard about LB previously from the okayplayer forums but once The Source gave the album 4 mics and drew A Tribe Called Quest comparisons, I knew I had to see for myself what all the hype was about.  First song I heard was “Nighttime Maneuvers.” I said to myself, ” Whaaaaaaat??!!!. (Lil Jon was really big at this time also)  I couldn’t believe what I just heard I had to listen to it again.  Phonte just straight murdered that track talkin about the aids cure and heinikens.  And the 9th Wonder track was like a breath of fresh air compared to all the Synth and Korg Triton beats that were filling the airwaves at the time (it’s actually even worse nowadays now though right?!).  I was also really spinning records in clubs heavy around this time with my crew and this was the inspiration I needed.  This group really reminded me of why I love hip hop so much and 9th Wonder was a big reason why I decided to learn production and not just dj.  Although it felt like my dog died when 9th Wonder left the group, I’ll never forget how this group made me feel when I first heard them.  So here’s some of my favorite joints from Little Brother.  Support real hip hop.  Peace.

The other day I was watching the actual House Party movie and found myself jammin to every song they played.  I really miss the New Jack Swing era when Teddy Riley ruled the radio.  All of the songs during this time had so much energy and just made you wanna dance.  Also I think this era is probably the most overlooked era ever.  Even when they play old school skits on the radio you hardly hear any songs from this era except for the usual “motownphilly” and “poison.”  So I felt like it was needed to pay tribute to all of the artists of this time period and pass it on to the younger generation.  Do your history.  Peace.

I’m an 80’s baby so I was really young when pretty much all of these songs came out.  So when I wasn’t playing with my Transformers, and Knight Rider toys I was in my room jammin believe that.  One thing I liked about the 80’s is that back then coming up when MTV really played music videos, you listened to all different types of music.  You could listen to Kool & The Gang and Stephanie Mills but also rock Peter Gabriel and Madonna.  Plus we had Saturday morning cartoons which was the bomb.  Ahh the good old days.  I got another hip hop mix coming shortly so check back.  Also email me or hit me on myspace or facebook if you want the tracklisting. This is actually the first mix I ever wanted to do but I decided till I was a few episodes deep to give it special attention.  ATCQ is a big reason if not the biggest reason why I even got into hip hop.  They are probably the most consistent group of all time in my opinion and their influence still inspires pretty much everybody today.  Although I do believe that J Dilla carried the torch passed from ATCQ and took it to a higher level, you still got to respect the pioneers.  This is for all the real hip hop heads and all the young people who respect old school game at its finest. Sorry for the delay I know it’s been a minute.  All I can say about that is Windows Vista is a very painful transition from XP.  But to close out 2007 I had to pay tribute to the one they call D-R-E.  I remember being a little kid listening to all these songs even though I probably shouldn’t have been.  This one is definitely not for the kids so please be warned.  To all my West Coast listeners I hope I did you justice with this.  Thanks again for all the support and I got a lot of things planned for 08 so tell a friend and keep checking in.  Peace to Radley in Germany this ones for you.  See you all in 2008.
